Khan dropped from WBC welterweight rankings

After placing Amir Khan at No. 2 at welterweight level in April, the World Boxing Council (WBC) has amended its rankings and dropped the Bolton-born fighter from its top 15 fighters at 147lbs.

Khan was surprisingly placed at No. 2 by the WBC despite having never previously fought at the weight, thrusting him into the mix for a shot at title holder and undefeated welterweight star Floyd Mayweather Jr.

However, since the previous rankings were announced on April 6, Khan successfully negotiated a bout with Julio Diaz in Sheffield at a catch-weight of 143lbs. This prompted the WBC to amend the 26-year-old's position and drop him from the 147lb mark completely.

Khan now occupies the No. 1 spot at light-welterweight level, behind champion Danny Garcia and mandatory challenger Lucas Matthysse, but recently admitted his desire to meet Mayweather in the ring before the American calls time on his career.

Khan lost to Garcia in their WBC light-welterweight title bout in July 2012 and after stating that he is beginning to struggle to make the weight at 140lbs, hinted a move up to welterweight level was highly likely.
