Groves: I'm getting closer to world title shot

Unbeaten super-middleweight George Groves insists that not many fighters remain above him as he continues to aspire to a desired world title shot.

Groves claimed victory over the dangerous Noe Gonzalez with a fifth-round knockout at London's O2 Arena on Saturday, as part of the undercard to Carl Froch's unanimous decision defeat of Mikkel Kessler.

Following the win over Gonzalez, Hammersmith-fighter Groves was quick to point at his rise up the world rankings and stated that it would not be long until he earned world title fight.

"People like Carl Froch are world champions and have been world champions for a long time so I understand why people think that I'm not quite there," Groves told Sky Sports. "But I'm ranked number one with WBO, number two with WBA, number three with WBC so there aren't that many guys in front of me and when they do put guys in front of me, I put them asleep."

However Froch, who is now targeting a rematch with unbeaten American Andre Ward in an attempt to avenge the only other defeat on his card, stated that 25-year-old Groves would have to get in line.

"He's a young lad, he's ambitious," Froch told Sky Sports News. "He obviously wants a piece of the Cobra but everyone wants a piece of the Cobra so I reckon he needs to get in line - that's what I think."
