Alvarez calling the shots over Mayweather Jr

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is proving stubborn in his quest to fight undefeated welterweight star Floyd Mayweather Jr, stating that he will not drop below the 154lb pound mark to step into the ring with 'Money'.

Unified light-middleweight champion Alvarez, who is undefeated in 42 professional bouts, has insisted he would not be prepared to drop any lower than his preferred level to fight the unbeaten American, leaving any chance of a potential clash looking less likely.

"I'll fight at my weight [154] against Mayweather," Alvarez told Univision Deportes. "I cannot go lower than 154 because that's where I feel good. My team and I are ready to fight Mayweather."

Alvarez weighed in at 172lbs before his unanimous decision defeat of Austin Trout in April, 25lbs heavier than WBC champion Mayweather Jr's desired 147lb welterweight level.

Earlier in May, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who also promotes Alvarez, stated that setting up a bout the pair was his "No. 1 priority".

However, Mayweather Jr is still guaranteed to earn $30 million for each of his five remaining contracted fights with Showtime meaning the 36-year-old is under no pressure to meet Alvarez's requirements.
