Amir lined up to fight Alexander

Amir Khan has struck a deal to fight IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander, with the bout likely to take place in Dubai in December.

Khan's career is back on an upward curve, following defeats to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, and he showed his durability by picking himself up off the canvas to beat Julio Diaz in April.

Alexander is on a four-fight winning run, but Khan's camp are viewing the American as a stepping stone to a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"Amir needs one fight at welterweight, along with a title, to set up the match with Floyd," Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told the Daily Mail. "He is getting that chance against Devon, who has agreed the fight. We will be finalising and signing the contracts in the next couple of weeks."

There has been no confirmation of a date or venue yet, but Schaefer will meet officials from Dubai who have signalled their desire to host the contest.

"We have opened discussions with the ruling family of the Emirates who have made it very clear that they are keen to put on a major boxing event," Schaefer said. "This is very exciting for Amir and all of us."

Khan is looking forward to taking on Alexander as he feels he will have too much speed for a fighter who beat Lee Purdy in his most recent bout.

"I am sure I can beat Alexander," Khan said. "He is a very good boxer and worthy champion but my speed will overcome his clever, difficult, slippery style."
