Groves happy to fight Stieglitz in Germany

Undefeated super-middleweight George Groves is weighing up the options for his next bout, admitting he would be willing to travel to Germany to fight WBO champion Robert Stiegltiz.

Groves has long stated his desire for a title shot, calling out the likes of newly unified champion Carl Froch, but insists he would have no fear in returning to Germany, where he defeated Baker Barakat in March.

The Hammersmith fighter, who sits at No. 1 in the WBO rankings, says he would relish the opportunity to box for a world title and believes he would prove a tough test for Stieglitz, who defends his belt against Yuzo Kiyota on July 13.

"Obviously the WBO situation, [Robert] Stieglitz is fighting soon, but with lesser opposition," Groves told Buncey's Boxing Podcast. "They're talking about him fighting Arthur Abraham in a rubber match. I'd love to have a crack. I'm happy to travel to Germany and bring my great support from the UK.

"That could be a huge fight for Stieglitz, he's fought relatively low key names other than Abraham, so I'm just progressing. Brits love a road trip supporting a British fighter. I've been over to Germany, it is nice to box. There are plenty of options for me, but it's tough as I've got nothing to really focus on at the moment.

"I'm looking at a big fight in September, ideally for a world title or along those lines. You've got Sakio Bika taking on Marco Antonio Periban in the WBC on Saturday, so once that is done, I could be elevated to number one position.

"You've got Andre Ward back in the mix, but without a title so we don't know what his moves are going to be. I'm number two in the WBA now Froch has got that belt, so maybe that is a fight that could be made."

The 25-year-old has risen through the ranks of the world organisations and is keen to take his career to the next level, revealing that he wants a quick resolution in his quest to become a world champion.

"I'm everywhere when it comes to rankings," Groves said. "Number one in the WBO, two in the WBC and WBA. I'm even ranked now in IBF. It could be any of those.

"I will literally take the quickest rather than the easiest route. Becoming mandatory is a tough thing, and then how long do you have to wait when you are mandatory position?

"I'm still waiting, there are other champions out there getting tied up. I'm working hard and I hope that something gets developed. It wouldn't surprise me if something was announced before the end of the year."
