Mayweather Jr 'too smart' for Alvarez

Unbeaten welterweight star Floyd Mayweather Jr will prove too smart for upcoming opponent Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, according to the 36-year-old's trainer and father Floyd Mayweather Sr.

'Money' meets Mexican Alvarez in one of the most anticipated fights of the year at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 14, as the pair will face off for the WBC light-middleweight and WBA super world light-middleweight belts.

Mayweather Sr believes Alvarez, who is 14 years younger than his opponent, may hold a youthful advantage but does not possess the boxing brain to extend his undefeated record and inflict a first professional defeat on the pound-for-pound king.

"Canelo's a young man. My son is old enough to be Canelo's father," Mayweather Sr said. "He's got a lot of youth in there, but it's going to take more than youth.

"He needs a brain in boxing. You're going to have to get in his head, because right now, Floyd has out-smarted all of them. This guy isn't as smart as my son."

The bout has been set at a catchweight of 152 pounds, something which Mayweather Sr believes will favour Alvarez.

"That's not my idea, because if it was up to me, he'd be at 150 [pounds] and not 152. So far, all of the advantages are to Canelo," Mayweather Sr said.

"The only thing he doesn't have is the mind that Floyd has. At that night, the smart guy is going to win, and that's Floyd."
