Derry Mathews produced an experienced performance to stop Curtis Woodhouse and retain his Commonwealth lightweight title at the Olympia in Liverpool.

Former professional footballer Woodhouse went into the bout with high hopes, but Mathews snuffed that out, using his experience to dominate from the first bell then ending the fight with a strong right hand in the fourth round.

Woodhouse attempted to regain his feet after being laid out by the stinging right, but he stumbled into the ropes and the referee immediately ended his count.

"He caught me with a good shot and I couldn't recover," said Woodhouse to Sky Sports. "To be honest, I can't remember too much about it. The best man won on the night. He's a top fighter and he got me.

"There's no definitely no quit in me. You look at a lot of top fighters who have lost a fight along the way. I'm a lot of things but I'm not a quitter I'll take a few days off, probably drink myself into oblivion, then get back in the gym."
