Groves to make Wembley return in world title eliminator

George Groves will fight for the first time since his Wembley world super-middleweight title defeat to Carl Froch when he faces Christopher Rebrasse on September 20.

Groves was knocked out by Froch for a second successive time when the pair clashed in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium on May 31 but the Hammersmith fighter will return to north London for his next bout.

Promoters Sauerland announced Groves will fight Rebrasse at Wembley Arena in what will be a WBC world title final eliminator. The winner could be set for a clash with either current champion Sakio Bika or Anthony Dirrell, who are scheduled to fight it out for the belt on August 16.

"It is great to be back at Wembley and back to world-class boxing," Groves told Sky Sports News. "Last time I was here it didn't go as well as I would've hoped but I think I have proved I belong here.

"Sometimes it takes just one punch and that is what ended my ambition to be world champion back in May but we are back on the road - the journey will continue.

"Win this fight and I am back in the picture, that is vitally important - I can't wait to be world champion and it will happen in the near future. It is good to be back in boxing and back in at the deep end."

Groves joined Team Sauerland shortly before his May rematch with Froch and the German promoters have billed Frenchman Rebrasse, the European champion, a suitable opponent for him.

The 26-year-old was previously unbeaten before suffering a controversial ninth-round stoppage defeat to Froch in November last year. Groves then secured a rematch, ordered by the IBF, for May but was savagely stopped by the Cobra during the eighth round.

However, while he has suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time in his professional career, Groves believes he is in a better place and vowed to right his wrongs in a bid to be crowned a world champion.
