Inside Boxing: Amir Khan on Porter-Brook and MayweatherAugust 12, 2014
In the first edition of ESPN's new weekly column, Inside Boxing, Amir Khan tells Nick Parkinson why he has a keen eye on Kell Brook's world title fight against American Shawn Porter on Saturday night in California.
"Kell Brook is stepping up to the big league for this fight after a long time of not meeting the best in the division and we will finally find out if he belongs at the top level.
There was a lot of talk of him fighting me - all from him - but I would never have fought him until he beat a name. So if he beats Shawn Porter on Saturday, a fight against Brook is one that can happen in the future for me. The whole world knows the only way I will fight Kell Brook is if he beats Porter.
This is a tough fight for Brook. I trained with Porter over at the Wild Card Gym in LA in 2009, 2010, 2011, so I know him. He's a strong all-round fighter and he can box, punch and put pressure on and he's quick. It's going to be a good fight and we haven't seen Kell up against a really good fighter yet.
It's Kell's first world title fight, he's top of the bill in America so can he cope with the pressure? We don't know yet if Kell is meant to be at the top level.
I've heard Kell has been finding it hard to make the weight but we've all had problems with that, myself included. Hopefully, he has worked it down gradually.
We have seen Porter look good in stopping Paulie Malignaggi in his last fight but when I beat Malignaggi in 2010 people were saying he was a shot and finished then. Malignaggi came back and won the world title and has got 100% out of his boxing career, but that was a win-win fight for Porter. He's also drawn with Julio Diaz in 2012 and then beat him a year later. I beat Diaz after he drew with Porter so I think both Porter and Brook are pretty much on the same level. Their opponents haven't been really top, top class.
You have to be 100% behind the British guy and hopefully he wins and we can fight at some time in the future. It will be an exciting fight but I think Kell hasn't been hit on the chin with a good shot yet because he's not fought the right opponents. I lean more towards Porter taking it, but want Kell to do it.
Another big welterweight fight coming up is the rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Marcos Maidana. Mayweather won their first fight by a majority decision and will definitely box differently this time around on September 13. For me, it will be a walk in the park for Mayweather. He will box and move and pick Maidana off.
I would be surprised if Maidana has the same energy as he did in the first fight - that was the best he's fought and I don't know if he has it in his tank to do it again. There was a lot of pressure on Mayweather in the first fight that he hadn't seen before and he took a lot of shots to the back of the head. A lot of people didn't see it going the way it did and Maidana won a few rounds.
If you look back at most of Mayweather's opponents, they were come-forward fighters. When he fought Zab Judah and Miguel Cotto, they boxed him and they gave him problems. He tries to avoid good boxers and I would say I'm one of the best boxers out there at the moment. He knows I can give him a lot of problems and it's a fight the whole world would watch.
In the last Maidana fight, you can see a bit of decline in Floyd because he doesn't throw a lot of punches and tries to preserve energy. His punch power is not as strong as he has gone up through the weights. We may have seen the best of him and if I can get a fight against him, I would be catching him at the right time."
