British welterweight Jerome Wilson is in hospital receiving treatment for a severe head injury after a knockout defeat to Serge Ambomo in Sheffield on Friday night.

Wilson was knocked down in the second round and the fight was eventually stopped in the sixth, with the 29-year-old given oxygen by paramedics at ringside.

"Jerome Wilson unfortunately suffered a severe head injury during his fight in Sheffield last night," fight promoter David Coldwell said.

"He is receiving the best possible care and while he receives his treatment Jerome's family request privacy at this difficult time.

"Further updates will be released when Jerome's family feel it appropriate to do so, therefore no further comment will be made until directed by Jerome's family."

Wilson arrived on the boxing scene with a knockout win over Henry Janes in November 2010, but was defeated on points by Cameroon's Ambomo in their first meeting in May this year.
