Amir Khan has told David Haye to put his retirement plans on hold in order to join him across the Atlantic and crack America.

WBA heavyweight champion Haye is counting down the days to his unification showdown with Wladimir Klitschko, which takes place in Hamburg on July 2.

The Londoner, 30, has continuously asserted that he will hang up his gloves before his 31st birthday in October, meaning his super-fight with Klitschko could potentially be his farewell bout.

However, Haye is still a fairly young fighter, with only 26 professional fights on his CV, and Khan, who spends much of his time in America training with Freddie Roach at the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles, believes his fellow Brit would thrive if he moved to the States before calling it a day.

"I think David's got a little bit of a way to go over here," he told Sky Sports. "I think this fight with Klitschko will definitely help him but with me, I came to America at a young age, I've fought here twice, had a lot of amateur fights over here, I train at the Wild Card in Los Angeles... that makes a big difference in getting me known out here with the media.

"David didn't do that of course and you can't knock what he's done, but I do think one or two fights in America would make him a star."

Khan, who takes on Zab Judah in Las Vegas on July 23, is convinced American fight fans would be fully receptive should more British fighters showcase their talents across the pond.

"Hopefully other fighters can fly the flag not only in Britain, but come over here to America to show them how good our British fighters are," he said. "I think when we do come over here, they love our style and they love the way we fight."

Pre-occupied with his own pre-fight preparations, Khan will be unable to attend Haye's date with destiny at the Imtech Arena - although he will be watching from afar.

"If I wasn't in training, I'd have been watching in Germany," said Khan. "But I think a couple of members of Team Khan are going to be there, anyway.

"We're always tweeting each other and he speaks to me on the phone. In fact I spoke to him a few days ago and he was telling me training was going really well; he'd just done his last 12 rounds of sparring and he was feeling nice and sharp, nice and strong. Hopefully I'll get to speak to him again before the fight - which is one I think he'll definitely win."
