Sergio Perez has received a five-place grid penalty at the Brazilian Grand Prix, dropping him to 19th on Sunday's starting grid.

Perez had a big accident during his final attempt in Q2 on Saturday, running onto the kerbs on the exit of Turn 4 before losing the rear and hitting the barrier. Both the front and rear suspension was damaged in the accident and after getting the car back to the garage McLaren elected to change his gearbox and incurred the penalty.

Perez put the crash down to pushing too hard in the wet weather.

"The conditions were getting worse, the rain was coming a lot more, so I was trying to push," he said. "The car was really difficult, I couldn't find any lap time and I knew I was on my last lap so I really pushed a lot to try to find a bit more lap time and I went a little bit on to the kerb and I lost the rear."

Sunday's race will be Perez's last for McLaren.
