Lewis Hamilton believes an error made on his final flying lap may have cost him pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Sebastian Vettel took pole ahead of Hamilton by just 0.087s, but Hamilton was improving on his final lap. However, approaching the final chicane Hamilton outbraked himself and had to cut the corner, and he said that he could afford to lose time as he was comfortably quicker than required, but that his main error was not staying out after his first run in Q3.

"I was seven tenths up going in to the last corner and I went straight," Hamilton said. "The last corner was quite slippery so you generally would lose most of that, but I only needed a tenth. In hindsight I should have stayed out on my first set because I could see it was starting to rain more, I just didn't make the call."

However, Hamilton was more upbeat looking ahead to the race, saying he thinks he has the car to challenge Vettel for victory.

"Tomorrow should be a good day. We've got a good car, degradation doesn't seem to be a big problem, and the car's behaving really well - I feel like I'm on it - so I hope that we can give Sebastian a run for his money. There's opportunity there so I've got to try and take it."
