Mark Webber slammed Giedo van der Garde for the contact which damaged his front wing when running third in the Canadian Grand Prix.

Having passed Nico Rosberg, Webber was trying to withstand pressure from Fernando Alonso while catching Lewis Hamilton when he came across the Caterham at Turn 10. Having appeared to open the door for Webber to lap him, van der Garde turned in and hit the Red Bull, breaking off part of Webber's front wing.

While van der Garde was handed a 10 second stop and go penalty for the incident, Webber said his own race had been compromised and said he "couldn't believe" contact was made.

"Obviously it was his fault," Webber said. "Obviously the stewards see it like that, he gets a time penalty and so do I obviously because I have a damaged front wing. I don't know if he has a lot of concentration to drive the car in terms of what's straight ahead of him, but obviously we had heavy blue flags up at the hairpin. I arrived in the mirrors on the long straight beforehand and then we made contact.

"I couldn't believe it - fair enough for position but when you're getting lapped with the leaders coming through, battling for the top spots and you're closing the door on the leaders it's not very clever."

Asked if it would have been beneficial to change the front wing, Webber thinks the team made the right call not to despite finishing the race back in fifth place.

"We're always experts in hindsight. It was probably best to leave it on; structurally it was sound but performance-wise it was a big hit for us, yeah."

Van der Garde received a five-place grid penalty after the race for another incident under blue flags when he made contact with Nico Hulkenberg, taking both out of the race.
