A marshal has died in hospital after being run over by a crane returning Esteban Gutierrez's Sauber after the Canadian Grand Prix.

Gutierrez's car was being brought back to the pits following his accident at Turn 2 when the incident happened at the pit lane exit. The marshal was hit and run over by the crane transporting the car, and after being treated at the circuit's medical centre he died at the Sacre-Couer Hospital in Montreal.

The FIA said that "the worker was helping to recover a car which had stopped during the race. The recovery vehicle had lifted the car to return it to the pits and while doing this the worker dropped his radio and attempted to pick it up. As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery vehicle.

"The worker was transported via helicopter to Sacre-Coeur Hospital where he was treated by the traumatology department. Unfortunately, the worker succumbed to his injuries at the hospital."

It is the first fatal accident in Formula One since a marshal was killed at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix when a loose wheel slid through a gap in the trackside barriers.
