Caterham's plight halted Barrichello comeback
Caterham's recent fall into administration appears to have denied Rubens Barrichello a shock comeback for the final three races of 2014.
It has emerged Caterham planned to give Barrichello, 42, Kamui Kobayashi's seat for the United States, his home race in Brazil and the finale in Abu Dhabi to give him a proper farewell from the sport. Kobayashi's seat had been confirmed on a race-by-race basis since he was replaced by Andre Lotterer at the Belgian Grand Prix in August.
The deal was worked on by Colin Kolles, previous Caterham team boss and Brazilian GP organiser, and looked set to give Barrichello his first F1 race since the 2011 finale at Interlagos, where he drove for Williams.
A team source told FOX: "We would have run Barrichello in the last three races. We had sponsorship for this, and everything was going the right way. It would have been fantastic for F1."
Barrichello added: "It would have been great to race in front of my people once again and say goodbye properly."
Had Caterham remained on the grid, Barrichello would have been in line to extend his record 322 grand prix starts - the most by any F1 driver. Since leaving F1 Barrichello has competed in IndyCar, Stock Car Brasil and the Daytona 24 Hours.
