1987
Hugo Porta scored 23 points to steer Argentina to a series-winning 27-19 victory over Australia in Buenos Aires. A week earlier the sides had fought out a 19-19 draw at Velez Sarsfield, with Porta again starring with 15 points. At the same ground seven days later, Ian Williams scored twice for the Wallabies as Micahel Lynagh chipped in with the conversion and three penalties. Argentina's sole try came from replacement Cristian Mendy, but Porta, playing alongside future national coach Marcello Loffreda, saved the day with his contribution.

2011
Saracens and Wigan Warriors announced a new historic partnership that established co-operation between the two coaching teams and academies, player loans and a cross-code match. As part of the deal, Wigan centre Joel Tomkins journeyed south and joined Saracens.

1979
Wales wing Mark Jones was born in Builth Wells. Jones made his international debut in a 44-15 thrashing by England at the Millennium Stadium in 2001 and became a fixture of the side through to the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. His international ambitions were threatened by a serious knee injury following Wales' quarter-final exit to England, and he did not play another Test until February 2006. In a Wales side struggling for consistency he was often a reliable performer and he played his second World Cup in 2007. In 2008 his hard work was rewarded by four starts as Wales romped to the Grand Slam, and he nearly sealed a place in the annals of Welsh rugby with a thrilling 80m break in the final game against France only to be hauled down short of the line. At club level he has been a loyal servant of Llanelli and the Scarlets.

1985
England flanker Tom Croft was born in Basingstoke. An athletic blindside flanker, Croft came to prominence with Leicester Tigers and was rewarded with an international debut against France in February 2008. Croft had broken in to the Leicester side in 2005 after playing youth rugby for Newbury and Under-21 rugby for England. After a superb 2008-09 season, in which Leicester reached the Heineken Cup final and won the Guinness Premiership, Croft was a surprise omission from the British & Irish Lions squad. A 12-week ban for Ireland's Alan Quinlan opened the door to him however, and he won three Test caps on tour, scoring two tries in the first Test.

1976
Glyn Davies, the brilliant Welsh fly-half of the immediate post-war years, died at his home in Bristol aged 49. Davies was a mercurial talent blessed with an elusive running style, and won 11 caps for Wales. His first appearances were in two Victory Internationals in 1946 while he was still a schoolboy, before his first Test cap against Scotland in 1947. During his playing career he turned out for Newport, Glamorgan Wanderers, Pontypridd, Clifton and Bristol.

1905
Jimmy Hunter ran in five tries for the All Blacks in their 47-0 win against Oxford University. It was the second time that the second five-eighth had scored five tries in a tour match - he did so in the match against Northumberland.

1936
In a sensational final five minutes, the 'Possibles' came from nine points behind to force a 17-17 draw against a star-studded 'Probables' team in the first Welsh trial of the season at Aberavon.

1942
In the first of the season's Services Internationals Wales beat England 11-7 at St Helen's, Swansea, before an excited crowd of 20,000 spectators.

1958
A rare win for the Italian national side touring Britain and Ireland. Fullback Nando Barbini kicked the conversion that gave his side a 5-3 win against Highfield in Cork.
