Newport-Gwent Dragons and Wales lock Luke Charteris is optimistic he will be fit for the start of the new Magners League season.

The 27-year-old will see a specialist this weekend about the neck injury that forced him to miss the end of last season with the Dragons and Wales' two-Test tour of New Zealand.

He has resumed conditioning work with the Dragons in the past fortnight and hopes now to be given the all-clear to resume full training.

"It feels a lot better, but I'll just have to see what the specialist decides. I hope to be fit for the start of the season," Charteris, who has been capped 22 times for Wales, told the South Wales Argus.

The return of Charteris to full training would be further good new for the Dragons, who also hope to have wing Aled Brew and teenage back-row forward Toby Faletau, who aggravated a foot injury playing for Wales at the Junior World Championship, back from injury for the beginning of the new season.
