Cardiff Blues and Wales have been dealt a major blow prior to the new season, with centre Jamie Roberts set to miss the first half of the campaign due to a wrist injury. Roberts, who scored Wales' sole try in their recent Tests against the All Blacks, will undergo surgery to fix the problem next week, ruling him out of the start of the Blues' Heineken Cup season and also possibly Wales' November Tests against Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Fiji. The 23-year-old picked up the injury in the British & Irish Lions' second Test defeat to the Springboks in 2009, with the full extent of the damage only coming to light following fresh scans at the end of the season. "I injured my wrist during the second Test in South Africa last summer," he said. "I had a couple of MRI scans which unfortunately didn't pick up the injury and it wasn't until the surgeon had a look with a camera into the joint at the end of the season that the full extent of the injury was diagnosed. "Unfortunately it needs an operation to stabilize the wrist. I played all of last season with a lot of pain in my wrist and so it is logical to get it sorted as soon as possible. It's pretty disappointing to be missing more or less the first half of the season, but I will certainly use the time to rid my body of any niggles I have and come back to the field in good nick and aim to lift more silverware with the Blues." © Scrum.com
