Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde will take charge of the Scarlets' pack for the forthcoming Magners League season.

The former Wales and British & Irish Lions hooker has looked after the national team's forwards since 2006, when he joined the coaching staff under Gareth Jenkins, and has continued the role under the guidance of current head coach Warren Gatland.

In 2009, while Gatland, Shaun Edwards and Rob Howley assisted the Lions in South Africa, McBryde supervised Wales' summer tour to the USA and Canada.

As a player, he made 250 appearances for Llanelli and the Scarlets and won 37 Wales caps between 1994 and 2005, when he retired following their Grand Slam-clinching win over Ireland in Cardiff.

He will work full-time with the region and head coach Nigel Davies but will be released to the Wales camp during the autumn internationals, the Six Nations and their Rugby World Cup preparations.

"There's definitely a good blend of youth and top-level international experience across the squad," he said. "I was fortunate to be part of the Scarlets coaching set-up for the U18s and saw players like Jon Davies and Josh Turnbull coming through and it's good to see how quickly they have progressed and developed to become part of the Scarlets senior squad.

"There's lots of potential here - it is a youngish side and as yet we don't know how far it can go. But what we have to do as coaches is make sure these players fulfill their potential and I'm looking forward to working with them."
