Newport Gwent Dragons climbed to seventh in the Magners League table with an 18-3 victory over a game but desperately limited Aironi side at the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors led 6-0 at the end of a first half of shockingly poor quality, with two penalties from Dragons fly-half Jason Tovey proving the difference between the two sides.
Scrum-half Tito Tebaldi raised hopes of a first Magners League win of the season when he halved the home side's deficit just over 60 seconds into the second half but the Dragons responded with tries from centre Tom Riley and winger Aled Brew either side of the hour mark to put the game beyond their Italian hosts.
The two tries were the only highlights of an otherwise dour contest and Dragons No.10 Tovey created both. The first arrived on 58 minutes, Riley touching down in the corner after collecting a beautifully measured crossfield kick from his fly-half.
The visitors then lost Andrew Coombs to the sin bin but they actually managed to extend their lead whilst down to 14, with this Brew being the beneficiary of a sublime chip from Tovey. The Dragons playmaker failed to conver the second try but it mattered not a jot as Aironi never looked even remotely capable of getting themselves back into the game.
