Ulster's Magners League hopes have been severely dented by the news that neither Paddy Wallace nor Andrew Trimble will play again this season.

Both players have been suffered fractured thumbs and will undergo operations later in the week which are likely to sideline them for approximately six weeks.

However, in a huge boost for Ulster, Wallace and Trimble's fellow Ireland international Stephen Ferris could yet play some part in the Magners League play-offs.

"We're quite hopeful if we can push on and get two good results in the Magners League and go on to a top-four finish, that Stephen will be available for the semi-finals," Ulster boss Brian McLaughlin said.

Elsewhere, Ulster are still waiting for news on the availability of BJ Botha for this Friday's meeting with Connacht, with the South African currently struggling with a knee injury.

Ulster currently stand third in the Magners League table with just two rounds remaining but the province is just three points ahead of the fifth-placed Cardiff Blues.
