Leinster regained second spot in the Magners League table and boosted their chances of a home semi-final in the play-offs with a 20-8 victory over Aironi in Viadana.

Ireland forwards Sean O'Brien and Cian Healy scored first-half tries for the visitors while Fergus McFadden, who took up the kicking duties in the absence of regular fly-half Jonathan Sexton, kicked both conversions and two further penalties. Scrum-half Tito Tebaldi landed a penalty for Aironi's only points of the first half.

The Italians, who trailed by 17 points at the break, showed plenty of fighting spirit to reduce the deficit in the second half, South African flanker Gareth Krause crossing for a try, but Leinster always looked comfortable against the league's bottom side.

However the Italian side's defence prevented Leinster from scoring any further tries and denied the visitors a bonus point, although the Irish province did move above Ulster into second position.
