Gavin Henson could be offered a career lifeline by former club Ospreys, after their managing director revealed he would be happy to have the 29-year-old back despite his recent troubles.

Henson's career appears to have hit a crisis point as he waits to hear confirmation of whether or not he has been sacked by French club Toulon just weeks into his short-term deal, after a similarly unsuccessful temporary spell with Aviva Premiership club Saracens.

But Mike Cuddy, managing director of the Ospreys, has confirmed the club would look into the possibility of re-signing the versatile back should he become available - although the Wales international would have to initiate any discussions.

"I think that's the case with any club or regional side. You never say never," Cuddy told the Daily Telegraph. "A lot of players who have left the Ospreys have said that one day they would like to return. That doesn't surprise me.

"As far as Gavin is concerned, if he wants to pick up the phone and speak to me or run a few things by me, he can. He knows that. We have never lost touch. Gavin is a complex boy, but a fantastic player with a great deal to offer. It's a crying shame that things happen. I really feel for him.

"I only hope that the latest setback has not ruined his chance of playing at the World Cup."

Henson spent six years as an influential player for Ospreys between 2003 and 2009, before being released from his contract in 2010 prior to joining Saracens.
