Scotland international Max Evans' hopes of playing in this year's Rugby World Cup have been dealt a blow with the news he faces trial for an alleged assault.

The 27-year-old, who won the last of his 19 Test caps against England in this year's Six Nations, is accused of attacking Alasdair McCaig during an incident at the Lulu nightclub in Edinburgh on August 1 last year.

Evans was not present at a preliminary hearing, held at Edinburgh Sherriff Court on Tuesday, because he was in California following a surgical procedure, but he maintained his not guilty plea via his lawyer.

The versatile Evans, who can play wing or centre, had his bail continued on the conditions he does not go to Lulu Nightclub or approach or attempt to contact the alleged victim. Sheriff Neil MacKinnon confirmed the trial would be held on May 30.

Evans, who is set to move from Glasgow to French side Castres this summer, was named in a 40-man World Cup training squad earlier this month, which will be trimmed to 30 for the tournament.
