Scottish Rugby Union boss Mark Dodson has revealed that the organisation is contemplating selling sponsorship rights to Murrayfield which could see the stadium being renamed.

Twickenham has recently been linked with a potential change of name in a bid to raise funds ahead of the 2015 World Cup. But while the Rugby Football Union has since distanced itself from the reports, its equivalent in the Scottish game - the SRU - has admitted that it is contemplating selling the naming rights to Murrayfield.

SRU CEO Dodson claims they are looking at ways to "monetise" the national stadium in a bid to "bring money in across our inventory".

"We want to be sympathetic about how we do it," Dodson told BBC Scotland. "We want to get the right price for it, it would be crazy for us not to look at using our single biggest piece of inventory to drive revenue.

"It depends on how you pitch and what goes in the package, but it's millions of pounds a year."

The Ireland Rugby Football Union sold the naming rights to its national stadium when it rebuilt Lansdowne Road into its new Aviva Stadium structure.

And the SRU has also revealed that it is looking into the possibility of finding a new ground for RaboDirect PRO12 side Edinburgh. The club currently use Murrayfield for their home matches but struggle to fill the 67,500 capacity ground. And Dodson admits that where Edinburgh play their matches in the future will not be a deal-breaker when it comes to selling naming rights to Murrayfield.

"We want to get Edinburgh a new home and so therefore we would not make it [naming rights] contingent on them playing in the national stadium," Dodson told the Scotsman. "It is important to get a 10-15,000 seater stadium for Edinburgh. We are looking at that with the council and others.

"We are making progress but Edinburgh is a difficult place to build. We have to be patient but we are clear in our objective and have a realistic view of what it will take to do that. It is possible in a couple of years time Edinburgh will have a new stadium. If you can identify land these things can be up and running in between 18 months and two years.

"We are working hard behind the scenes."
