Scotland have drafted in Dean Ryan and Steve Scott on interim contracts for the forthcoming Six Nations.

Ryan and Scott will work alongside temporary boss Scott Johnson throughout the tournament and will link-up with fellow coaches Matt Taylor, Duncan Hodge and Massimo Cuttitta in Scotland's backroom staff. Ex-Gloucester boss Ryan, who was recently appointed as a consultant for RaboDirect PRO12 side Dragons, will take charge of the forwards while Scott, who was sacked by Sale earlier this season, will take on the skills coach position.

Ryan said: "I've responded to an invitation from Scott to assist the Scotland management team over the next 12 weeks and will look to bring my experience to bear to give Scotland players the best opportunity to represent their country in the best way."

Scottish Rugby's CEO Mark Dodson heralded the appointments saying: "Dean will be with us for 12 weeks and will bring all his top-flight coaching savvy and experience to bear on our forward pack. Dean and Stevie will start work on Monday.

"I believe in Dean and Stevie that we have a combination here of hard-nosed experience and deep-rooted understanding of Scottish rugby and its players, which Scott Johnson and his management team will be able to call upon."

Johnson, who was appointed as Scotland's interim coach following Andy Robinson's decision to step down following their poor autumn Test series, added: "I'm delighted we have secured the services of Dean and Stevie for this year's Championship.

"To get people of their calibre mid-season is a real coup. Dean is a sound, knowledgeable, mature rugby man and Stevie, with his background of having played 11 times for Scotland, knows what it means to wear the jersey. With Matt, Hodgey and Massimo already fully engaged in Six Nations planning, we've now a management team in place for the start of the Championship next month."

Meanwhile, the SRU has also confirmed the Scotland A coaching staff for their match with the England Saxons on February 1. Head coach Shade Munro will be assisted by Scott Murray - Scotland's most-capped forward. Murray has been helping coach the Mont-de-Marsan forwards in the Top 14 but he will now link up with Scotland.
