Sergio Perez thinks he should have made the top ten in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix and admitted he made an error with his tyre warm-up ahead of his hot lap.

Perez will start from 12th on the grid after struggling with the set-up of his car all weekend but said the car was capable of more.

"It was frustrating," Perez said. "Definitely today we should have been in Q3 and I didn't manage to find as much as others on my last run. The warm up of my tyres was not ideal and I really struggled to put everything together in Q2."

McLaren tested various new parts during Friday practice, limiting Perez's time set-up time ahead of qualifying. After a spin in second practice he admitted he had lost some confidence in the car and after qualifying he said using Friday as a test session put him on the back foot.

"It doesn't help, no. You're unable to prepare your weekend and set up your car and it makes it harder. But today the car was capable of Q3 and it's not there. I will be very happy if I can get some points tomorrow. That's all we can do and we have to just keep our heads down to try to do our best."
