Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the remainder of England's tour of Sri Lanka.

Broad emerged as an injury doubt for the second Test when he was seen limping while batting during the defeat in Galle on Thursday.

He was sent for a scan which confirmed his calf injury is serious enough to sideline him for the second Test which begins in Colombo next week.

Broad has had a torrid time with injuries on the tour, as he picked up an ankle complaint when tripping over a boundary rope during a warm-up game.

He shrugged off that problem to feature in the first Test loss, only to pick up a calf injury that requires further assessment.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement read: "England pace bowler Stuart Broad has been ruled of the final Test against Sri Lanka after a scan today confirmed a right calf strain.

"Broad will return to the UK immediately for further assessment before beginning a rehabilitation programme which will determine his availability for all cricket including the IPL."

Broad is contracted to Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League.
