Tim Bresnan has spoken of his delight at being named alongside Glen Chapple, Alan Richardson, Alastair Cook and Kumar Sangakkara as one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year.

Yorkshire seamer Bresnan has taken his career to a new level in the past 12 months and is now a key figure in the England side. He took 21 Test wickets at 19 and showed his prowess as an allrounder by scoring 189 runs.

"I am in a very select group, so it is fantastic," Bresnan said. "I am thrilled.

"I have been getting my yellow-bound copies of Wisden for a while now and to be one of the five cricketers of the year is a massive honour."

Sri Lanka batsman Sangakkara has made history by becoming the first man to be named simultaneously as Wisden's leading cricketer in the world and one of its five cricketers of the year. He hit five tons and 13 fifties in amassing 2,267 international runs last year.

Chapple has been rewarded for leading Lancashire to County Championship glory, while Cook was recognised for hitting 927 Test runs at an average of 84.

Worcestershire seamer Richardson is not well known to many but was the leading wicket-taker in Division One last season with 73.

Richardson said: "To be recognised alongside world-class cricketers such as Alastair Cook, Tim Bresnan, Glen Chapple and Kumar Sangakkara is a real honour."
