Kevin Pietersen's hopes of playing in the World Twenty20 were boosted on Thursday after the International Cricket Council extended the deadline for teams to submit their squads.

Pietersen's international future hangs in the balance after he admitted sending "provocative texts" to members of the South Africa team, and he has been dropped for the third Test at Lord's as England battle to retain their No. 1 status.

His hopes of being named in the 15-man squad for next month's tournament in Sri Lanka appeared to recede when captain Andrew Strauss suggested a resolution was unlikely to happen before the end of the third Test, which begins on Thursday.

However, after receiving requests from several of its members - although England are not thought to be one of them - the ICC has now deferred the deadline by six days to August 24, giving Pietersen hope he can reconcile his differences with the England set-up in time.
