England have announced their squads for the ICC World Twenty20 and the one-day series against South Africa, with Kevin Pietersen featuring in neither as had been expected.

The 32-year-old was dropped from England's third Test against South Africa after it was revealed he had sent 'provocative' text messages to England's opponents with his team-mates the subject of his ire - something he later apologised for.

Pietersen had retired from limited-overs international cricket but recently backtracked, making himself available for all formats of the game just before he was dropped from the Test side.

He has now been overlooked in both the 15-man Twenty20 and one-day squads.

"Kevin Pietersen's future involvement is still being determined and he was therefore not considered for selection in either squad," said national selector Geoff Miller after the ECB's confirmation of both squads.

Pietersen was Man of the Tournament in the Caribbean when England won their first global trophy, but in June retired from limited-overs internationals after deciding to quit 50-over cricket - which made him unavailable for Twenty20 under the terms of the central contracts.

However, following the Headingley Test against South Africa he had a u-turn and, via a video on YouTube, made himself available for all international cricket before, the next day, being left out of the Test side.

England face South Africa in five one-day internationals - the first in Cardiff this Friday - and then meet their opponents in three T20 matches before they start the defence of their T20 crown in Sri Lanka on September 21.

Luke Wright and Michael Lumb are among the more notable inclusions in the T20 squad.

"The T20 squad mirrors the squad we have selected for the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka and the three-match NatWest series provides this group of players with valuable preparation in what will be a highly competitive series ahead of the tournament starting in September," added Miller.

Stuart Broad will captain the T20 side while Alastair Cook will lead the ODI team.
