James Anderson is confident England have the firepower to offset the possible absence of Steven Finn.

Finn seems certain to sit out the warm-up game with Mumbai A, which begins on Saturday, and is also a major doubt for the first Test with India on account of a thigh strain.

Should Finn miss out, it will be a major blow to England as the seamer has matured into one of the key cogs in the bowling unit. But Graham Onions is waiting in the wings and Anderson feels the team will cope.

"It's not ideal because you want to choose from your strongest squad," Anderson said. "But we're lucky we have a number of bowlers who can come in and do a great job for us.

"Graham Onions, I'm sure, will get a chance in the next couple of games to show what he can do.

"It's exciting for those guys. Obviously it's unfortunate for Steven - we'd like him to be fit for selection - but injuries do happen."

England are being tipped to make a host of changes for the game with Mumbai A. Captain Alastair Cook may sit the game out - meaning Nick Compton and Joe Root will open the batting in what could be a shootout for the Test spot alongside Cook.
