England have been handed a much-needed fitness boost with the news Stuart Broad has only suffered bruising to his heel.

Broad was sent for a scan on his left foot after reporting discomfort towards the end of the second day's play of the warm-up game with Mumbai A.

England have already drafted in Stuart Meaker as cover for Steven Finn, who strained his thigh in the first warm-up match, and there were major concerns over Broad. However, the scan came back largely positive and Broad was able to field on the third day.

An ECB statement said: "Scans show Broad has a bruised left heel. He is fit to field but won't bowl today. Progress will be monitored over next couple of days."

He did not bowl as England knocked over Mumbai A for 286, but that he took to the field is a huge positive ahead of the opening Test with India which gets underway on November 15.

The focus can shift to the batting and it would appear Nick Compton is in pole to open with captain Alastair Cook as Joe Root fell lbw for 24 in the second innings, while he made an unbeaten half century.
