Compton stakes claim for Test spot

Nick Compton hopes that his patient half-century in England's draw against Mumbai A will help to stake his claim for a place in the Test side to face India.

The opener had produced a combined total of one run in his previous two visits to the crease on tour but was buoyed by a confident 64 as England reached 149-2 in their second innings to draw the three-day match at the Dr DY Patil Sports Stadium.

Fellow Test hopeful Joe Root departed for 24 on the back of his first-innings 28 after forging an opening partnership of 38 with Compton, who admits it has taken some time to adjust to the conditions in India.

"In the first couple of games my feet weren't moving that well and I got caught out, but that can happen," Compton said.

"You've got to switch on quickly and now I've spent some time out there hopefully I can take it from there.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't have an eye on that opening spot, and I take a bit of confidence from getting the nod in the first game - that's why I was disappointed not to take that initial chance.

"I've got over that now, and I've been working really hard with the coaches behind the scenes to get used to the conditions, speaking to people who spend a lot of time out here.

"That sort of knowledge is important, especially when I've been playing most of my cricket in England for the last two years."
