Stephen Peters will lead Northamptonshire in first-class cricket next season, after Andrew Hall stepped down as club captain.

Alex Wakely has been named vice-captain and will take charge of Northants' CB40 and T20 sides.

Hall, who led the club from 2010, when he succeeded Nicky Boje, is contracted until 2014 and has decided to focus on his own form. Peters has been given a benefit year in 2013 and will now take on the captaincy as well.

Northamptonshire's chief executive, David Smith, said: "Splitting of the roles between red- and white-ball cricket was something that had been identified by a number of counties as the best way forward in the modern day game."

Northants finished second from bottom of Division Two of the Championship in 2012, while winning just two games in limited-overs cricket. Wakely captained the side in Hall's absence through injury and the club said his appointment as Peters' vice-captain formed part of their "succession planning for the future".

Peters, 33, joined Northants from Worcestershire in 2006, having begun his playing career with Essex. Last season, despite a slow start, he finished as the team's leading Championship run-scorer, with 763 at 36.33.
