Danny Briggs, the left-arm spinner, has been ruled out of the Twenty20 series against New Zealand and England Lions' tour of Australia after spraining his right ankle during fitness training ahead of the final ODI against India.

Joe Root will replace Briggs in the T20 squad for the New Zealand matches and means he is now involved in all three formats during the tour.

Briggs, who has played one ODI and three T20s, has not figured during the one-day series against India and may not have earned a place in the T20 matches against New Zealand due to the impressive form of James Tredwell, who is the other frontline spinner in the squad.

He would have been one of three spinners in the Lions squad for the one-day series against Australia A alongside Durham's Scott Borthwick and Simon Kerrigan of Lancashire.
