Compton recognised with Wisden honour

England batsman Nick Compton has been named as one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year - emulating his grandfather Denis, who received the honour in 1939.

The Somerset player, 29, received the prestigious recognition alongside West Indian batsman Marlon Samuels and three South Africans - Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn.

Compton was nominated for his achievements in the summer of 2012, where he amassed 1,494 first-class runs at an average of 99.6. He narrowly missed out on becoming the first player for 24 years to reach 1,000 first-class runs before the conclusion of May - however, his form was still enough to earn an England call-up.

Compton made his Test debut against India during the winter, overcoming a few concerning moments to slowly establish himself as captain Alastair Cook's likely opening partner for this summer's Ashes series.

Amla, Kallis and Steyn all proved key players as South Africa defeated England 2-0 in their Test series last summer, moving the Proteas to No. 1 in the Test rankings.

A cricketer can only receive the Wisden nomination once in their career.

Australia captain Michael Clarke was named the outstanding cricketer of the year. He becomes the first Australian to win the award since Shane Warne in 2004.
