Australia all-rounder James Faulkner has been ruled out of the third Ashes Test in Perth after suffering a fractured thumb during a nets session.

Faulkner was Australia's 12th man during the first two Tests against England and had been in the frame to replace Ryan Harris, who remains doubtful with a knee injury.

However, team doctor Peter Brukner confirmed Faulkner would not be in contention for the crucial Third test, which begins at the WACA on Friday.

"James was struck on the right thumb while batting in the nets and was subsequently taken for an x-ray which revealed a fracture of the thumb," Brukner said. "As a result he will not be available for the third Test. His progress will be monitored for a return to playing duty depending on how quickly the injury heals."

England currently trail Australia 2-0 in the five Test series, having lost by 381 runs in Brisbane and 218 runs in Adelaide.
