Cook close to quitting one-day captaincy

Alastair Cook has admitted he will have to consider his position as England's one-day captain in wake of another demolishing defeat and series loss to Australia.

England suffered a seven-wicket defeat at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday as the hosts wrapped up the series 3-0 with two matches to spare. Earlier on the tour Down Under, Cook's side suffered a humiliating 5-0 whitewash Ashes loss.

As a result, Cook's captaincy came under question and, despite maintaining he would stay on as leader following the Ashes defeat, he revealed after the latest downfall he is to weigh up his options on his return to England at the end of the series.

"It has been two weeks since I was asked that question and a lot has happened in two weeks," Cook said. "We have kept losing games of cricket and I have not turned it around.

"I am going to have to make a decision on that when we take stock after the next two games. We have sat down and talked about a lot of things. I think there will be some changes. I think English cricket needs a bit of change as well. The last few months we have not played the cricket we are capable of playing. We have to look at the reasons why.

"When you are a captain in Australia and you have lost in Australia for the past three and a half months it is not a great place to be. I have got a job to do. I have to try and turn it around and win one of these games."
