Chris Gayle has suggested England are substantially weaker without Kevin Pietersen and believes terminating his contract was "disrespectful".

England are set to start their three-match T20 series against West Indies at Bridgetown in Barbados on Sunday, on a ground where Pietersen played a huge role in guiding his side to World T20 glory four years ago.

Now opener Gayle insists the hosts' job has been made easier by Pietersen's absence.

"KP is one of the best. Any team would love to have him in their ranks," said Gayle.

"I think it was disrespectful how he was treated and the way he went out but you never know what happens behind closed doors.

"I'm glad I won't be facing him on the field. He's a tremendous asset and someday I hope he gets back into the England mix if the door ever re-opens."
