England attitude unacceptable - Giles
Ashley Giles has launched a scathing attack on the "complacent" attitude of the England side that slumped to a 45-run defeat against Netherlands in the last of their World Twenty20 group matches.
England had nothing to play for but pride against the Dutch, having already been eliminated following defeats by South Africa and New Zealand, but were routed in Chittagong after managing a paltry 88 in reply to Netherlands' 133-5.
Giles, who is in the running to succeed Andy Flower as England's head coach, said he had not reconsidered his commitment to the role but refused to make excuses for England's performance, accusing Stuart Broad's side of failing to take responsibility for their performance and not giving everything for the team.
"It's disappointing and embarrassing," Giles told the BBC. "There has to be a certain amount of complacency. Guys have to take individual responsibility to get the job done, and we did not do that today. You have to use that word complacency, there can be nothing else for it."
The defeat was England's 18th of the winter, a record - England had previously lost 17 matches in 2006-7 - and Giles apologised to the fans who had travelled to Bangladesh to follow the team.
"I understand why the supporters are angry," he later told reporters. "There are quite a few who have come out to Bangladesh to watch us, there are some in our hotel. All we can do is apologise and to the people watching at home.
"You can't just pick and choose when you are up for it. You have to be up for it all the time. The only thing in Holland's minds this morning was beating England and sending us home. We should have been aware of that, every one of us.
"I don't like to discuss what I will say to the team, but we will have a chat before leaving the ground, as we always do. I hope they will know that is not acceptable.
"Every time you put on an England shirt, bowl a ball, field a ball, hit a ball, you have to have everything in it, and we didn't today."
