Derbyshire and Leicestershire have agreed to postpone their opening Championship fixture of season, which was due to start on Sunday at Grace Road, after Tom Poynton, the Derbyshire wicketkeeper, was involved a serious car crash that claimed the life of his father, Keith.

Poynton, 24, was admitted to hospital after the accident, which happened on Friday evening, with a suspected fractured collarbone and other injuries which were classed as serious, but not life-threatening.

The Derbyshire chief executive, Simon Storey, said: "We are a small close knit group here at Derbyshire and Tom's dad was well-known to our players and coaching staff.

"We are still trying to come to terms with the devastating news and at the moment our concerns are solely with Tom and his family at this difficult time.

"We are deeply indebted to the chairman, chief executive and director of cricket at Leicestershire CCC, who have supported the decision to postpone the game. I am very sorry to everyone who was looking forward to the opening fixture."

The fixture will now provisionally start on June 8. An Leicestershire statement said: "As a mark of respect, the game has been postponed…with the ECB giving its blessing to the decision."

The Second XI friendly fixture between Derbyshire and Leicestershire, which was due to start at Derby this week on April 7, has also been postponed and will be moved to a date to be agreed.
