England's opening one-day international against India in Bristol has been abandoned without play due to heavy rain.

Alex Hales was set to make his international debut alongside captain Alastair Cook at the top of the order as England look to build on their recent 3-1 Test series win against India.

England however, would have been without all-rounder Ravi Bopara after he was left out England's ODI squad, a decision described by former England players Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Swann as a mistake.

Both Pietersen and Swann believe England should adopt a new ODI selection policy if they are to stand a chance of winning the 2015 World Cup.

The ODI series with India will resume on Wednesday in Cardiff and England will be hoping for a positive result following their 3-2 ODI series defeat by Sri Lanka in June.
