Samson Lee's chances of playing in the Rugby World Cup have been described as "touch and go" by Wales  coach Warren Gatland.

Lee was stretchered off against Ireland in March having injured his Achilles and has been in a race to be fit for the quadrennial tournament ever since.

It had been reported earlier this week that the prop could be fit for Wales' opener against Uruguay on September 20, but that now appears unlikely.

Gatland, though, did concede that Lee could be included in his squad in the hope that he is available for subsequent matches.

"He's doing pretty well but it's touch and go in terms of the World Cup squad," Gatland told Sky Sports News.

"We might have to take him as an injured player and hope he's OK by the second or third game."
