Western Province left it late to claim a spot in the Currie Cup final, beating the Golden Lions 21-16 in Johannesburg on Saturday thanks to a last-minute try from Duane Vermeulen.

The Springbok No.8's score at the death set up a title decider against Natal Sharks next weekend, with last season's beaten finalists through after a 20-3 win over the Blue Bulls.

Province were able to capitalise late on following an off-night with the boot from Lions playmaker Elton Jantjies, who nevertheless had a hand in his side's only try - for flanker Michael Rhodes.

Vermuelen's try followed a five-pointer from replacement fullback Joe Pietersen, while fly-half Demetri Catrakilis chipped in with a brace of penalties and a conversion.

The Sharks will contest their third straight final after seeing off the Bulls, and will have home advantage at Kings Park.

In a game marred by poor conditions Sharks playmaker Pat Lambie landed five penalties, easily eclipsing the efforts of Springbok rival Morne Steyn for the visitors.

Lwazi Mvovo, another of the Sharks' international contingent, scored the only try of the game on 74 minutes, rounding off a decent team move in the corner.
