Bradley Wiggins retained the overall lead in the Tour of Romandie on Thursday, as Jonathan Hivert sprinted to victory on stage two.

Hivert, riding for the relatively unheralded Saur-Sojasun team, found a gap during the sprint to the line and held on to claim a notable stage scalp.

Wiggins remained in the peloton over the finish line, but that was nevertheless enough for him to retain a seven-second lead over Team Sky compatriot Michael Rodgers.

Hivert, claiming his first World Tour stage win, capitalised as rivals Rui Costa (Movistar) and Luis León Sánchez (Rabobank) focused on each other to win the 149.1km stage by half a length.

Wiggins' squad dictated proceedings for much of the stage, although there was a slight setback after world champion Mark Cavendish found the final climb too much to handle as he fell back - although his stage had already been hampered by a couple of technical problems that affected his ride.
