Team Sky have confirmed that Mark Cavendish will make his fourth appearance at the Giro d'Italia next month.

The world road race champion leads a strong nine-man squad, but Bradley Wiggins will not ride in the first of the three Grand Tour races.

Cavendish will be supported by British colleagues Geraint Thomas, Ben Swift and Peter Kennaugh, who are all making the transition to road racing after gold medal winning performances at the World Track Cycling Championships in Melbourne.

Bernhard Eisel and Juan Antonio Flecha, who both enjoyed success in the recent Classics series, will also ride alongside Ian Stannard, while Colombian duo Sergio Henau and Rigoberto Uran complete the team.

"The Giro is one of my favourite races of the season and I'm very happy to be riding it," Cavendish said. "We've got a good squad to go and win stages.

"Geraint, Pete and Swifty have just come off the track so they should have that explosive power which will be important in the first week, and the rest of the team have all done well in the Classics."

The Giro d'Italia gets underway in Denmark on May 5 and finishes in Milan on May 27.
