Lars Bak timed a burst to perfection to snatch victory on stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia, while Joaquin Rodriguez managed to cling on to the overall lead.

Stage 12 was always considered a likely candidate for a breakaway group to enjoy success, and so it proved.

A seven-strong collective built a lead of seven minutes with 38km to go, and from that party Michal Golas made a solo dart to move out ahead with 25km left to ride.

Golas stormed into a 22-second advantage over the rest of the break and five minutes on the main field, before being reeled in and overtaken by Sandy Casar, Andrey Amador and Ivan Santaromita.

But victory ultimately went to Bak, who attacked decisively with around two kilometres left for his first road stage win since 2009.

The peloton finished fast, crossing around 3:34 back, which was enough to keep Rodriguez in the pink jersey for another day.

He still leads second-place Ryder Hesjedal by 17 seconds, while Casar and Santaromita made significant gains in the general classification.
