Mark Cavendish made it back-to-back wins in the Tour of Britain, sealing a silk-smooth success in Blackpool.

The Sky rider was at his scintillating best in winning in Dumfries on Tuesday and he followed it up on the Lancashire coast.

The stage from Carlisle to Blackpool had the look of an ideal one for Cavendish and his team played things to perfection.

A four-man break held a decent lead at one stage but the Sky boys took up the chase and made the right calculation to eat into the lead at the required rate.

Bradley Wiggins has been prominent all week and he put in a huge shift at the front of the peloton, showing he is both in shape and happy to work for the good of the team.

Wiggins showed his tactical nous in the final two kilometres by putting the echelon in the gutter to prevent any teams from disrupting their plans.

Race leader Leigh Howard got in the train in the final kilometre, but if anything it helped Cavendish as he handed him one more wheel to sit on.

Cavendish pulled out with 200m to run and careered away to seal the stage - securing a 10-second time bonus that took him into the race lead.
